The Lakes Area Arts League is a non-profit organization established to promote interest and knowledge of all areas of the visual and performing fine arts through education and appreciation while enhancing the culture and tourism of the community and surrounding areas.
The Art Center
The Lakes Area Arts League Art Center is located in the
“Blue House” at 305 Nacogdoches Street, one block from the historic
downtown square, in Center, Texas. Rich in cultural history and
according historical documents, the Art Center house was constructed in
1881 and was known as the Carlton Smith or Mrs. Martha A. Leslie
homestead.
Previous owners of the property include, Mr. E.B. and Nellie May Lewis Day; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Anderson; and the City of Center.
Mrs.
Day taught piano lessons in her home and would move the piano across
the street to the elementary school for recitals. The marks from the
moving the piano are still visible in the floor in the main gallery.
The
property was later purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Anderson, who lived in
the home with their family, which also served as his business location,
Anderson Insurance Agency.
In 1992, the City of Center acquired the property and the facility was used for the office of Judge Gaines and City Court.
In
December 2005, the Lakes Area Arts League received the keys to the
building from Mayor John Dean Windham and the lease was signed with the
City of Center. At the key ceremony, Mayor Windham stated he had
preserved the original front porch light fixture, which has been fully
restored to the building.
After nine months of renovations to
the building, the LAAL held the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on
September 15, 2006 with Mayor John Dean Windham, Pam Phelps, Executive
Director with Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, LAAL Board of
Directors, artists, patrons and visitors. The first official art
exhibition held at the Grand Opening was for Woodrow Foster, Center
resident and Texas State Artist 1991. Over 1,110 visitors attended the
grand opening and two day exhibition. Mr. Foster was presented an
Honorary Membership.
Special arrangements can be made for tour
and school groups; the building can also be used for meeting space for
civic organizations or gatherings.
The Art Center is currently
utilized for art exhibitions showcasing local and area artists and is
available to regional, national and international artists seeking to
display their work. The building is also used for workshops and
classes. Special arrangements can be made for tours.
